The shocking number of animal cruelty cases reported every day is just the tip of the iceberg—most cases are never reported. Unlike violent crimes against people, cases of animal abuse are not compiled by state or federal agencies, making it difficult to calculate just how common they are.

Why is there so much abuse, neglect, torture, and cruelty towards animals? I will never understand how humans find it entertaining to abuse a living being. And this is going on around the World. How cold-hearted can somebody be to hurt an innocent soul? The most abused animals are dogs and cats.

For many owners, dogs and cats are just a thing or a farm animal, but for animal lovers, they are family members. We worry if they are sick, do not come home from outdoor activities, and make sure that they are always fed and healthy.

Farm animal

Dogs and cats are farm animals, especially in rural areas. Cats are mouse hunters and dogs guard the yard. For this purpose, they are usually kept on a chain and they have to spend their existence year in and year out alone and under cruel conditions and in all weathers outside. These poor beings have no social connection. They are not treated with loving care and many of them do not even get enough to eat or drink. They are left to fate. These chain dogs stand and lie in their urine and feces.

Cats also suffer enormously. They don’t care about them. Despite the compulsory castration in some countries, cats reproduce rapidly. The owners don’t want to bother about it and bypass the laws. It’s horrible to watch these kittens vegetate and the owners refuse to give them medical help. No attention is paid to the mothers either.

Many of the cats are still babies themselves when they first give birth. And it’s a never-ending cycle that has to be broken. Something has to change tremendously. Legislators must be more strict. Many kittens die miserably. They have cat flu, purulent eyes, parasites, worms, and mites. These kittens and their mothers experience unfortunate suffering.

Animal cruelty dog fighting

And yes, they are still happening. The dog fights. In secret and illegal. A heinous crime against defenseless animals. How can you have fun letting two dogs loose on each other and betting on which one will win?

It is common for dog fighters to take kittens, dye them different colors, and then lock them up with a fighting dog. Dog fighters appear to be betting on which kitten will die first or which will survive. Just disgusting and cruel.

Although there are many breeds of dogs used for fighting around the world, the dog of choice for fighting in the United States is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Attack dogs must be kept isolated from other dogs so that they spend most of their lives on short, heavy chains, often just out of the reach of other dogs. They are usually not socialized towards other dogs and most people.

What is a bait dog?

A bait dog is basically a punching bag for wild (fighting) dogs. But we all know that dogs don’t hit, they bite and tear. Dog fighters use bait dogs so their hunting dogs can practice mutilating another dog without getting injured.

To make sure their dogs aren’t harmed, they either use tape to tape the bait dog’s mouths shut or break out their teeth to keep the bait dog from fighting back. They also either put them in a pit or tie them to a tree or pole so that they cannot escape the wild dogs. And I said dogs in the plural because they generally let loose multiple dogs on a bait dog at the same time. It makes the wild dogs more aggressive as there is competition.

To me, this is the most terrible form of animal cruelty. I know this is hard to weigh because there are so many forms of abuse, but the use of bait dogs comes at the top. The majority of bait dogs do not survive and apparently suffer a horrific death, spending their final moments in excruciating pain and scared to death. Those who survive are mutilated and scarred for life, both physically and emotionally.

Animals on death row

It is frightening how humans decide about life or death of an animal. It doesn’t give us the right to play god. Every living being has a right to life. But apparently their lives don’t count for some owners, animal shelters and killing stations. One of them is Minsk. Every year around 5,000-6,000 animals are brought to the killing station in Minsk.

But there are also enough owners who simply bring their animals there because they want to get rid of them. If no one is found to adopt these poor souls, then they will be murdered, killed. Simply unimaginable. Just how these animals suffer, crammed together waiting for it to be over. They are trembling and afraid. Not a loving touch or a soft voice. There you can find puppies and kittens that have their whole life ahead of them. It’s just horrible to see something like that.

Supportthe association Tierhilfe Belarus to rescue the animals from the killing station.

Cruelty to Animals in the United States

In America, too, there is a fight against abusers of animals. Unfortunately, the laws in the states are different. Some have stricter requirements and others do nothing to protect the lives of innocent animals. Dogs and cats are killed, burned, abandoned, starved to death and nobody does anything. Shelters designed to provide protection, kill healthy animals just because they are overcrowded. Animal welfare groups take care of these innocent souls on a daily basis.

One state hits the headlines every day, Texas. Too many dogs in Texas are treated like property that can be disposed of or thrown away at will. It starts with the governor of Texas. Earlier this year, legislators wanted to pass a bill that would protect dogs from being tied up and chained outside in extreme heat and cold. But the governor, Greg Abbott, refused to sign the law, saying that Texas had enough laws to protect animals.

A neighborhood in South Dallas near Dowdy Ferry and Tea Garden Road is a dump for live and dead dogs. Animals are simply disposed of by their owners and left to their fate. If they are not saved, then they will die. Puppies and their mothers are also increasingly found there. The little ones were born in the garbage dump and sentenced to die.

No end in sight

Something has to be done. WE have to do something. Tougher measures need to be taken. But as long as our politicians are not interested and as long as humans become monsters and stand above animals, nothing will change in the distant future. And those who suffer will always be the innocent souls who actually want nothing other than affection and love.

Reference is only ever made to waves of humanitarian aid. Whether wars, environmental disasters, floods, hunger, poverty etc. Animals, on the other hand, are in the shadow of mankind and are only taken care of last. It’s sad that only human life counts, but an animal is only a thing.

Finally, I would like to thank all the associations and animal rights activists who devotedly and selflessly take care of abused, tortured, abandoned, sick and helpless animals every day.
